I sat up and rubbed my eyes. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows—dust motes floating lazily in the beams—the bright light evidence that it wasn’t early morning. Or maybe not morning at all.

The fluffy white duvet covered me, but the robe I’d been wearing the night before—Dominick’s robe—was draped across the nearby chair. I didn’t remember taking it off. My last memory was stomping back to my room after being forced to leave the club.

Two of Dominick’s sizable guards had returned me to the palazzo, not giving me even the smallest chance of escaping as we’d taken the powerboat through the canals, and they’d bustled me quickly inside the mansion. I’d been more upset that Dominick had sent me home than I had been about not being able to escape.

How could he work me up like that and then send me away? I’d been seconds away from letting him fuck me up against a wall when Rami had interrupted us. Even thinking about Dominick’s hard body pressed against mine and how he’d dominated me with that kiss made my pulse quicken and my stomach do a flip.

I put a hand to my temple. And what had happened right before he’d kissed me? I closed my eyes and tried to place the strange fluttering I’d heard before everything had gone dark and he’d kissed me, but the memory of the kiss made my head swim even now.

“Come on, Ella,” I muttered to myself as opened my eyes and swung my feet over the side of the bed, the tightly woven rug rough under my toes. “He’s not that hot.”

Okay, that was a lie. He was that hot and more. But that wasn’t the point. I’d made a deal to spend the summer with him, not the rest of my life, and I’d certainly never signed on to be his prisoner.

I spotted a tray on the low gilded table in the sitting area and rolled my eyes. There was a silver coffee service along with a wrapped basket. Of course, Dominick had thought to have breakfast waiting for me when I woke up.

“Infuriating,” I said, casting a dark look at the tray and walking instead to the door. I paused with my hand on the knob, holding my breath as I twisted it. I expected it to be locked, but the door opened easily. I released a breath. At least I wasn’t locked in my room. That was something.

I closed the door and hurried back to the bathroom. After barely waiting for the water to warm and taking the world’s fastest shower, I finger combed my hair and applied my version of a full face—tinted moisturizer, lip gloss, and mascara. Padding back into the bedroom in a towel, I snatched a pink sleeveless shift from the wardrobe, tugged it over my head, and headed for the door. I was not standing off against Dominick Vicario again in nothing but a bathrobe or a skimpy dress.

The palazzo was still quiet, but the ominous shadows that dominated the interior at night were gone.
